Myanmar, formerly Burma, is a large country situated in the middle of South East Asia. With a population of 52 million spread across vast rural areas it is a challenging place to work. It is here that The Leprosy Mission runs the MIRANDA project for people affected by leprosy and other disabilities through a series of fifteen clinics and drop-in centres. The clinics provide rehabilitation through equipment, to overcome disabilities (such as having prosthetic limbs) as well as counselling and emotional support. The clinics aim to provide complete holistic care and a place of support and refuge.
Changing lives - one at a time: Sithubo's story
When Sithubo first came to the centre he could not sit unaided and had little co-ordination. Now he is able to sit without help and to put the pegs into the peg board.
Myanmar, like all countries in the developing world is a very difficult place to live for anyone with leprosy or disability. The MIRANDA project aims to make life easier by offering support for people to return to work, for children to access schooling and, through emotional and spiritual support, help everyone regain dignity and hope for the future.
