NORTH EAST & CUMBRIA

On 25 June, 35 brave souls took the challenge of riding the Tyne Zipper to raise funds for The Leprosy Mission. It was a great day and everyone who took part loved the ride. Climbing over the Tyne Bridge and balancing on a small ledge before zipping was just a little scary but everyone managed it with the greatest of ease! People from around the region took part, even travelling from as far a field as Carnforth and Cockermouth. There were a mixed group of participants - teenagers from Cullercoats Methodist church, two Methodist ministers and several Leprosy Mission staff, including myself - but perhaps the 'star' of the ride was Mary from Gateshead, who at 80 completed the ride in fine style. The director of Zipslides UK who organised the event, said that Mary was the oldest person to date who had taken part in any ride his firm had organised; so well done Mary. Nor must we forget 'Tarzan' and 'Jane' (aka Paul and Peter) who forsook their jungle to zip with us all. Everyone is now busy collecting their sponsorship money. So far £5,300 has been collected. Many thanks to everyone who took part: to those who came to support the zippers and to those who have generously given. The event was a great success and we hope to have another zip ride in 2012 so watch this space.
