Splash Out for The Leprosy Mission in 2011

On a beautiful Saturday in July - 320 intrepid walkers gathered at Hest Bank near Morecambe to walk across the low tide sands of Morecambe Bay to raise money for The Leprosy Mission.

The weather was perfect - lots of sun, but not too hot - and not plagued by the heavy showers of the preceding days. The Leprosy Mission team had a very busy couple of hours checking everyone in - and just after 11.00am Derek gathered everyone together to thank them and to pray. The guide team under Alan Sledmore was introduced and they gave us safety and practical instructions for our walk. When it was announced that the walk was going to raise in excess of £8,000 in sponsorship - a great cheer went up from the walkers - and off they went.

The channels of the River Kent had split into three because of the rainfall during the week - so the walkers had to wade through knee deep, (or deeper on the smaller walkers!) fast flowing water on three separate occasions. It was great to see the dogs swimming, people helping each other across and some of the children just throwing themselves in the water. At the end of the 10 mile walk some four hours later, everyone (including some of the dogs) received their completion certificates from the Leprosy Mission team and boarded the comfortable coaches to take them back to Hest Bank - where the cafe and the fish and chip shop did a roaring trade.

Many thanks to all who took part - and next year - let's do it again on Saturday 30th June at 1.30pm!! See you there.
