We Brits do like to talk about the weather don't we? It is probably because the Great British Weather is as much a part of the culture as Football, Morris Dancing and Real Ale! We endured every weather pattern the skies had to throw at us during the inaugural Whitstable Walk of Hope. Starting at the Whitstable Lifeboat Station we wandered through the docks and out along the sea front. We'd been going for about two hours when the heavens opened so an executive decision was made to pop into a nearby pub for a cup of coffee !
As the winds and rains subsided and the sun decided to come out, we continued along the seafront until we reached our half-way (and lunch) point on the pier at Herne Bay. Naturally as we all sat down to eat our picnic lunch, the rains came again, so we high-tailed under the covered area and watched the rain bouncing off the sea.
Fortunately, as we were ready to start our return journey to Whitstable the sun decided to shine again, so away we went in beautiful sunshine. Walking towards Herne Bay, we'd been fighting into the wind, but now it was at our backs, encouraging us along, the stunning seafront walk with its famous brightly decorated beach huts, the marshlands and then back through Whitstable Harbour. We even stopped at the fish market, where Lisa picked up a freshly caught Grey Mullet as a Father's Day present for the following day (which her Dad says was very nice, in case you were wondering!)
We arrived back at the lifeboat station, tired, wet, windswept, but happy, knowing that by braving the elements of the North Sea weather we were raising money to help people brave the effects of leprosy thousands of miles away.
Details will be released in the new year of future walks including the 2nd Whitstable Walk of Hope. Please join us at a location near you, or if you'd like to partner with The Leprosy Mission in arranging your own Walk of Hope in your town, do contact Lisa.
