Maliya's story

Outside her small house,
under the porch, Maliya
regularly sits shading
herself from the hot
Nigerian sun. She sells
biscuits to passers by,
and children gather there
waiting to buy snacks.
The house behind her
is full of cooking pots,
where she makes the
biscuits from fried
groundnuts.
To help prevent Maliya's
disabilities and those of
others in the leprosy
settlement from getting
worse, she is now the
leader of a women's
self-care group
established by The
Leprosy Mission.
Members meet regularly
to check each other for
injuries to desensitised
areas (typically the hands
and feet) and encourage
each other to take care
of any wounds. The gift
of treatment at an
early stage surely
is a gift of infinite worth.
