Helping farmers out of poverty

59-year-old Armando lives in Cabo Delgado, Mozambique. Tragedy struck his happy family in 2010 when poverty- related disease took the lives of his wife and three of his children and soon after his other two children married and moved to their own homes leaving Armando alone in grief, At the same time Armando learnt of his own failing health when he was diagnosed with leprosy.

Because he did not take the cure for leprosy at an early stage, leprosy-caused nerve damage resulted in Armando injuring himself without realising. He developed terrible ulcers on his hands and feet, lost his fingers and toes and struggled to move around and look after himself.

Thankfully Armando's fortunes changed in November 2016 when he was offered a place at 'farming school'. He now earns an income by working the land and grows cassava, sesame, cowpea, pigeon pea and peanuts. His relationship with the local community now helps to support his farm when he's too ill to work and membership of a local savings group allows him to borrow money to support his farming practices.

Changing lives together

There are hundreds more leprosy-affected people like Armando living in Mozambique who are still going hungry. By holding an event at your Church, workplace or with your friends and family, and encouraging a contribution, you will help more people access a more nutritious diet and escape a life of hunger.
