Everyday tasks become fraught with danger when leprosy damages nerves in the feet. Infected cuts can lead to ulcers and disability. Sandals made from special microcellular rubber are customised to fit the patient’s feet. Only two thirds of the people who needed sandals received a pair in 2005.
