More than a cure
The Leprosy Mission

The first of the new series of award-winning current events programmes on Channel 4's Unreported World meets some of the remarkable people fighting back against the neglected tropical disease, leprosy. In India, millions affected by leprosy are pushed to the margins of society and ostracised by their families and friends.

Reporter Seyi Rhodes meets people who have been shunned because of leprosy and interviews Dr Premal Das, superintendent at The Leprosy Mission's Naini hospital - the largest leprosy referral hospital in India. The film features the work of The Leprosy Mission including the surgical techniques used to correct deformity caused by leprosy, and the bravery of patients striving to overcome stigma.  One such patient is 16-year-old Pooja who had surgery to correct deformities in her hand.  The film follows Pooja on a sensitive journey home, to her community.  She is uncertain whether they will accept her because she has had leprosy.

If you missed it, you can watch again worldwide on Channel 4's on Demand (4oD) service - a podcast from Unreported World is also available
