Trek for Treatment with The Leprosy Mission

Nepal is among the poorest and least developed countries in the world where almost 30% of the population live below the poverty line.

The Leprosy Mission's hospital in Nepal is in the hills at Anandaban, 12km outside Kathmandu.   It is a lifeline to people affected by leprosy and the wider community living in the scattered rural mountain areas all over Nepal (also providing accident & emergency, maternity, surgical and outpatient facilities).  Many patients come to the hospital after having travelled for days.  Anandaban provides essential treatment to these patients.

Leprosy is curable and patients are given multidrug therapy treatment.  It can take anything between six months and two years to complete the course. However, many patients still require reconstructive or eye surgery, ulcer care, physiotherapy and counselling before they can rebuild their lives.

Leprosy patients are now integrated with other patients in the general wards, helping to dispel the stigma surrounding leprosy in the population and fuller integration of cured leprosy-affected people within society as a whole.

By taking part in our March 2012 Nepal Trek and raising much-needed funds for Anandaban, you will enhance the lives of all the patients there, including those affected by leprosy.   You will join that special band of people whose contribution has raised so much money for our work in Nepal over the years.

The truly unique element of the Trek for Treatment is that you see the work which is the fundraising focus of the Trek.  You have a tour of the hospital's departments, see its essential work first-hand and meet the patients.

"I saw many stunning and amazing sights in Nepal but seeing the work at the hospital and the dedication of those involved, will command my long lasting respect and admiration."

"The trekking company was first-class.   The food was great; and we were looked after 24 hours a day.  I thought the route was perfect. Considering the mixed ability of the group, it was well chosen.  We had time to go at our own pace and enjoy the scenery and the company."

So why not join us on the 2012 Nepal Trek and experience it all for yourself while helping us to improve the lives of leprosy-affected and disabled people in Nepal?
