LENT STUDY NOTES 2010
THE COST OF DISCIPLESHIP

During this course of study we will focus on the cost of discipleship and explore various themes.

USING THESE NOTES:
  • Select the material that you feel appropriate to your group.  The material is intended as a guide and to stimulate thought
  • The notes assume that someone will be leading the group. The leader should familiarise himself with the notes and then they can be adapted for your own use
  • There are also a number of Bible references, some of which could be read aloud to help with discussion

This series of Lent notes has been complied by John Roughley, Leprosy Mission Area Co-ordinator for the North East and Cumbria.  You can download them by clicking on the headings below.

Week 1 - Lent and the temptations of Jesus

Lent is the 40 day period before Easter starting on Ash Wednesday. Traditionally people may fast or give up something which is important or a temptation to them, as a way of preparing themselves for the journey towards Easter Sunday. It is a time when people may focus on some of the issues and costs of being a follower of Jesus Christ.

Week 2 - The cost of being different

Being a follower of Christ has always involved a 'cost'.  Christian values and beliefs are sometimes in conflict with worldly views.  It is not easy to go against current views and stand out (or be different) whether it be in the family, at work or amongst friends.

Week 3 - Speaking up for those without a voice

Proverbs is a book of wise sayings - of how to apply divine wisdom to daily life. These were words spoken many centuries ago yet still bring a challenge to the world of today.

Week 4 - The cost of giving

Any mention of giving and our thoughts immediately go to money.  However, giving is not just about our finances but also our time; in this study we shall briefly explore both.

Week 5 - The cost of being a servant

Service and being a servant suggests that we are under someone's authority; we are subservient, having no will of our own.  This is a concept many people would find difficult. Perhaps we all have a little bit of a rebellion within us.

Week 6 - Review and reflection

'Let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.  Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.  Consider him who endured such opposition . so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.'
