BEING A VOLUNTEER FOR THE LEPROSY MISSION
Barbara asked me to write a few words about what being a volunteer means to me.
I promised myself that when I retired and had more time I would do some voluntary work, and it would definitely not be in an office as I spent most of my working life there!!!
On moving to the Peterborough area I heard of The Leprosy Mission and contacted them. I realised that what I had to offer was in fact my admin experience.
I now work one day a week in the office in Peterborough among the friendly and helpful staff. Working in a Christian environment is a wonderful experience and I am now enjoying working in an office much more than before.
Each week is completely different. My tasks have included scanning the hundreds of slides onto the computer, filing, searching for websites, and sending out material, making name badges, phoning educational establishments and much more. I also have the opportunity to borrow books from the resource library which has increased my knowledge of leprosy.
I would say to anyone thinking of volunteering, take the plunge and use your talents.
