Pray for Mozambique
Abielle Hallas, The Leprosy Mission Great Britain
As Storm Chandra hits our shores and our headlines, people in Mozambique are facing the worst flooding in living memory.
Just two weeks ago, Storm Goretti caused havoc across the UK. Storm Ingrid hit the south-west coast over the weekend. And today, Storm Chandra has brought a fresh wave of severe weather warnings.
Every year, we see the worsening impacts of the climate change. No country can escape its effects. Yet the crisis unjustly hits the world’s poorest people the hardest.
This January, Mozambique has faced torrential rain and flash floods. With the rainy season lasting until April, the impacts have already been catastrophic.
Over 700,000 people have already been affected. Tragically, at least 120 have died. 82,000 homes are flooded, and thousands of families are living in temporary shelter. The risk of diseases spreading is high.
Farms have been completely submerged. For the many families that rely on hand-to-mouth farming, crop failure will be devastating.
Roads are becoming hard to navigate, or even completely inaccessible. This makes it hard to reach rural communities affected by leprosy.
Please pray:
- For protection for communities across Mozambique. May all those who have lost homes and livelihoods know the Lord’s comfort and peace.
- For people affected by leprosy affected by the rain and floods. Already marginalised, pray that they will be included in the humanitarian response.
- For our team in Mozambique, as they faithfully serve communities affected by leprosy. As climate disasters increasingly impact their work, ask for wisdom and resilience to tackle the challenges ahead.
- That governments and decision-makers will act to address the climate crisis. Pray that the needs of the world’s most vulnerable, including those affected by leprosy, will be heard.
