God's Rescue plan for Adam
Growing up in North Africa, Adam had a happy childhood. He had lots of friends, loved running, and dreamed of becoming a diplomat.
He was just 11 years old when that dream was shattered.
Adam began to lose the feeling in his hands and feet. At first, he pretended it was a superpower, holding his hands over fire to impress his friends. But the burns and infected cuts that slowly destroyed his fingers were no joke.
His family went from doctor to doctor, trying to find out what was wrong. You can imagine their anguish as they desperately searched for answers. But no one could help. In his country, leprosy didn’t exist. That’s what everyone was told. Eventually, someone from the WHO diagnosed him from photos. Adam managed to get the cure at a local hospital. But it was too late to restore the damage to his hands and feet.
Adam needed his community’s support more than ever. Instead, he faced heartbreaking rejection. People told him he was cursed.
“My wider family were scared of me. They stayed away. I felt frightened about the future, and so depressed. Everyone believed I was cursed. I kept asking my father what sin I was being punished for.
“The hatred towards me grew. For a year, I didn’t leave the house. I forgot people and voices. Death threats hung over me like a dark shadow.”
In the midst of hopelessness, God heard Adam’s cry. He put a rescue plan in place for this young man. A rescue plan for eternity.
One day, Adam reached out to the UN Special Rapporteur for Leprosy on his phone. His messages were read! And thanks to kind people like you, The Leprosy Mission could respond.
Adam was referred to Danja Hospital in Niger, which faithful people like you support. He was welcomed with open arms. And after years of pain, he finally found the care, compassion and acceptance he deserved. Adam knows now that the love he received was the love of Jesus. He gave his life to Christ last year and was baptised soon after.
