The Mission was ‘born and cradled in prayer’. - Wellesley Bailey, founder of The Leprosy Mission

Will you join with us to pray for those affected by leprosy?

It has been 150 years since Wellesley Bailey made that statement, and prayer still has a vital place in everything we do. Every morning, members of the Leprosy Mission family around the world pause to pray for their work and for the needs of people and communities affected by leprosy. Additionally, hundreds of our supporters lift up prayers for our hospitals, our staff, and those impacted by leprosy. We have witnessed the power of prayer and God's care for those affected by leprosy.

Will you make praying for people affected by leprosy a part of your daily devotion?

Asia

This month we are asking for people to join us to pray for The Leprosy Mission Hospital in Nilphamari, north Bangladesh. This hospital provides treatment for around 1,000 people every year, who are suffering with leprosy. The region is prone to flooding and this, along with desperate poverty, means that diseases like leprosy are rife. The hospital is a lifeline because poverty and stigma prevent access to healthcare anywhere else.

  • Nilphamari Hospital is the only referral centre in Bangladesh that provides reconstructive surgery. These intricate operations restore movement, enabling people to return to work and provide for their family. Please pray that God would guide the hands of the surgeons as they transfer tendons in hands and feet. May He bless each patient with restored mobility and complete healing.
  • Physiotherapy is vital after surgery to make sure patients regain their range of movement. Dedicated physiotherapists spend time with patients, showing them how to mobilise hands and feet through exercise. Please pray that people understand the importance of continuing their exercises when they leave the hospital.
  • The hospital runs the best guesthouse in the area. It attracts visiting businesspeople, government employees and foreigners working with other charities. This generates valuable income which subsidises leprosy care. Please pray that the guesthouse continues to be fully booked and give thanks for this sustainable source of income.
  • Whether patients come to Nilphamari Hospital to be cured, have ulcer treatment, surgery or eye care, we want them to feel the love of Jesus while they are with us. Please pray that Jesus’ love is shown with every wound dressed, every surgery undertaken, every kind word and every arm around a shoulder. May staff never lose the heart connection to people affected by leprosy

Africa

Conflict and civil unrest blight many of the countries across Africa. More than five million people in Ethiopia and one million people in Mozambique have been forced to leave their homes.

  • We praise Jesus for the faithful and fearless service of Leprosy Mission teams across the world. As they support those who are traumatised and made homeless by war, pray our loving God will provide for and sustain them.
  • We give thanks for the bravery and resilience of the Mozambican team. Faced with relentless conflict, their dedication for people affected by leprosy has endured. Pray that God will pour out his blessings and protection on them as they drive projects to help people affected by leprosy ever forward.
  • In the aftermath of war in the Tigray region of Ethiopia, people affected by leprosy continue to rebuild their lives. Thank you for standing with them in prayer, even as others move on. Pray that our Lord’s peace will rest over them as they recover from the devastation.

The Leprosy Mission Prayer

Almighty Father, the giver of life and health, look mercifully on those who suffer from leprosy.

Stretch out your hand to touch and heal them as Jesus did during his earthly life. Grant wisdom and insight to those who are seeking the prevention and cure of the disease; give skill and sympathy to those who minister to the patients; reunite the separated with their families and friends; and inspire your people with the task set before The Leprosy Mission, that it may never lack either the staff or the means to carry on its healing work, in accordance with your will, and to the glory of your holy name.

We ask this for the sake of Jesus Christ your Son, our Lord.

Amen.
